Tool: The Triunity of God ‒ 4D Grid

A sample theological learning experience design on the Triune nature of God, created for our Transformational Theology course.

Malcolm Webber

This holistic learning design revolves around the doctrines of the Trinity, and can be used to build greater love and worship for our Triune God into the lives of disciples and leaders.

Whether you are in working with ministry leaders on the frontlines or in your church, or simply looking to build yourself in this area, this simple, Four-Dynamic design is an invaluable tool for growth.

The Triunity of God

Transformational Purpose: Fellowship with God
Key Passages: John 16:13-15; 17:3, 20-26

Spiritual Dynamics

    • Pray Paul’s prayer of Colossians 1:9-14, asking God to bring you into deeper union with the fullness of the triune Godhead.
    • Devote a day to fasting and prayer to know God, focusing on the union within the triune being of God.
    • Meditate on God’s triunity in John 13 – 17, John 16:13-15, John 17:22-26 and Colossians 1:1-20. Focus on His self-giving love within the Godhead and how that impacts our lives. Make journal notes.
    • Repent of satisfaction with mere intellectual knowledge about God’s triunity. Before God, commit to know Him!
    • Reflect on times when you have experienced God’s presence in the past. Why did you enter in? How can you foster this in the future?
    • Recall past periods of dryness. How can you avoid this in the days to come?
    • Meditate on Luke 10:38-42 and respond to God in prayer.
Sing worship songs that exalt the triune Godhead.
    • Talk to God as your Father and seek to know His love and care, as He loves the eternal Son (John 17:23).
    • In your team, read Psalm 63 aloud to one another while viewing pictures of barren deserts. Cry out to God that you will know Him!

Experiential Dynamics

    • In your next ministry assignment intentionally look to God, moment by moment, depending on Him for direction, wisdom and empowering to be effective – whether teaching, or praying for someone who is ill, or helping the needy.
    • Practice the habit in all ministry assignments, of continually looking at God and depending on Him.
    • Help a small group to experience what you’ve learned about fellowship with the triune God. Try to find a group outside of your own comfort zone, for example, from a different culture.
    • Teach a group of small children about what it means to know God.
    • Lead and help someone into a deeper experience of God through the Word and prayer.
When you pray for others, use the name of Jesus, being conscious of yourself as a joint-heir with Him.

Relational Dynamics

    • Share with a partner your reflections about your personal successes and failures in knowing God.
    • Be accountable to a mentor about pursuing daily fellowship with God. When you meet, reflect on how you did in the previous week.
    • Send daily text messages to friends encouraging fellowship with God, and sharing your own experiences.
    • With two others, affirm one another as being deeply loved by God. Personalize Ephesians 1:3-6 as you pray together.
    • Ask forgiveness of those you’ve hindered from knowing God by your own inappropriate attitudes.
    • Talk to those who deeply know God – true friends of God, young warriors, wise elders, who are filled with contagious enthusiasm for God. Let them share their testimonies with you and pray for you.
In your team, discuss how you can help each other to have union with God – both individually and corporately. Then implement your ideas.

Instructional Dynamics

    • Study the triune nature of God, and also the main historical denials of the triune God.
    • What other doctrines can be perverted by a misunderstanding of God’s triune nature? How?
    • Study how other religious errors can diminish or destroy the experience of knowing God.
    • Study the book of Acts in four teams (seven chapters per team), finding interactions of believers with the Holy Spirit, specific references to the work of the risen Son, and mentions of God the Father. Respond to God in prayer.
    • In your team, search the four Gospels for interactions between the Father and the Son, noting the intensity of the passion between them and Jesus’ intentionality in spending time with His Father.
    • In your teams, find six passages in the Bible that express God’s desire for us to know Him. Share them all together and respond to God in prayer.
    • Create a psalm, drama, rap, dance, song, or poster on yearning for union with God using triunity passages.
