True Giving: A Brief Exposition of Philippians
What is the source and power of true divine joy?
Malcolm Webber
Philippians was written to a church birthed in suffering and characterized by boldness, fruitfulness, and perseverance amid severe persecution. Paul focuses his letter on the theme of giving, defining the source, nature, and purpose of true giving in the life of Christ and for the glory of God.
This sort of true giving endures opposition and suffering with deep and genuine joy – not just human happiness, but an expression of the inward divine life that gives oneself sacrificially for the good of others.
Paul writes to his beloved friends in Philippi to exhort them to humility, sacrifice, unity, and the pursuit of God’s highest purposes. We are called to the same!
